Cheers! Prost! Salud! Ba’sal’a'ma’ti!

One of our missions in starting GlutenFreeGluttons is to encourage the spread of gluten-free awareness outside the home. This includes the city’s countless bars, salons, taverns and drinkingholes. It is a simple pleasure when we discover a neighborhood bar serving gluten-free beer.  Wine and spirits have their time and place but let’s face it, sometimes you just want an ice cold beer. For example, it isn’t practical nor healthy to cheer your team on in the World Cup with a martini at 11:30 AM… (we don’t know this from experience).  While we work on publicizing and increasing the number of establishments selling gluten-free beer, we also want to make sure you know the truth behind alcohol and gluten.

Before you enjoy your next glass of wine, gluten-free beer or cocktail, educate yourself with the facts. Chiara Shannon, the Head Sommelier at K&L Wine Merchants, breaks it down for us.  Please read her piece on Gluten Free Drinking.

And We’re Off!

Thank you all for coming out to our launch. What a great success! Adriana and the team at Pica Pica Maize Kitchen really out did themselves with fantastic food, speedy service and scrumptious sangria! Thank you!

In addition to San Francisco’s gluten-free diners, we also had some gluten-eating friends. There was one very doubtful friend, who will remain nameless. Full of support for the cause and his friends, he entered the restaurant with hesitation. This friend of the Gluttons was squeamish about eating a totally gluten-free meal. He grabbed fear by the horns and ordered all three “breads”: the arepa (grilled flour cake), the maize’wich (sweet corn bread), and the cachapa (sweet corn pancake). Each came loaded with a different Venezuela treat. Let’s just say by the time he finished, he was converted!

If you’re a GlutenFreeGlutton or just a glutton, you must try the Mission’s newest Venezuelan restaurant. Everyone leaves happy and the GF diners leave healthy!

Pictures of the party are coming soon… the camera is currently enjoying vacation in Nicaragua.

Hello world!

May 8th, 2010

We’re an online organization cataloging, recognizing and spreading awareness of gluten-free friendly restaurants, bars, bakeries and grocery stores in the San Francisco Bay Area. We’re working with restaurants’ kitchen staff on providing GF menu options, educating them about cross-contamination and working with bar managers to carry gluten-free beer. Our target audience is young professionals and college students. We strive to alleviate some of the stress and anxiety of eating outside the home for our demographic, a group that seems to be constantly eating outside the home!

To facilitate the spread of gluten-free awareness, we plan to hold quarterly events focused around different gluten-free establishments. We look forward to seeing you at our first event on June 17!

After we get our feet wet in SF we’ll be expanding to other cities across the nation.  If you have any gluten-free friendly establishments that should be included on GFG.com, please don’t hesitate to email us: contact@glutenfreegluttons.com.
